Review: Mini Hitachi aka Magic Wand Mini Rechargeable by Vibratex

The Magic Wand Mini Original posed with its packaging.

The “Hitachi” Magic Wand Rechargeable was a dream purchase for me. It’s incredibly powerful. It’s incredibly rumbly. When I use it on my clit I can feel the vibrations in my freakin’ bones.

In the 4 years I’ve had the Magic Wand Rechargeable, I’ve kicked and screamed through some pretty powerful orgasms. But I’ve also spent a lot of time bitching about how bulky it is. It’s difficult to finagle, especially when you’re juggling it through different positions or partnered use.

Vibratex has finally sought to give my achy wrist a break with the Mini Magic Wand Rechargeable. This petite variation of my beloved powerhouse wand is about 40% cheaper – and significantly smaller.

The Magic Wand Mini is the latest in a legacy line that stretches back into the 1970’s.

The Original Magic Wand’s nickname was the Hitachi, named after the electronics manufacturer that created it as a non-sexual massager. It went through a rebrand with sex toy company Vibratex, who later released an upgraded (but still corded) Magic Wand Plus and a cordless Rechargeable version.

When it comes to sex toys, the Magic Wand Rechargeable is a beast: it’s 13 inches tall and weighs about 1.3 pounds. It’s like holding a club. The Mini Magic Wand is only 9.5 inches and weighs half as much.

At first glance, the Mini and MWR look identical: white plastic handle, bright blue silicone buttons, a narrow flexible neck, and a marshmallow-shaped silicone head. But the Mini’s buttons are different: on/off, increase, decrease. There’s no button for patterned settings.

It’s a small tweak, but a welcome one. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve meant to change the intensity on my MWR only to hit the pattern button. (I hate staccato vibrations. Give it to me steady!) It’s also nice to be able to increase or decrease the speed at will, rather than cycling through all the levels to get to the intensity I want.

The buttons are easy to locate by touch alone. They don’t require much finger strength to push. Depending on how I’m holding the handle, my palm usually rests on the buttons, but I’ve never accidentally pushed one.

Like the fullsize Magic Wand Rechargeable, the Mini is rechargeable via an outlet plug. My guesstimate is the Mini gets about 2 hours on a full charge with varied speed use. But since I don’t use a stopwatch and my sessions are only in the 5 to 30 minute range, heavy emphasis on the guess.

The Mini Magic Wand Rechargeable (like the rest of the line) is not waterproof. It’s not even splash proof! You have to be extra mindful of the charge port, buttons, and neck (especially the head’s open seam.) This can be difficult if you’re messy, clumsy, or in a rush. I’m 3 for 3.

I know what you’re wondering: how powerful is this baby?

The Mini Magic Wand Rechargeable is not a total jackhammer like the fullsize version. It’s not as powerful, nor as bone-shakingly rumbly. Depending on your vibration preferences, this either makes the Mini less impressive, or just less intimidating.

The Mini has just 3 intensity levels vs the MWR’s 4. I prefer more range than that (and the jumps in strength between the Mini’s speeds is almost jarring) but eh. The Mini’s vibrations start out with a robust rumbliness that feels familiar to – but gentler than – the MWR’s first speed. It’s toe-curlingly good. My body is often slow to arousal, so having some deep vibrations massage the internal portion of the clitoris (because it’s so much more than the external glans) is helpful and pleasurable.

The Magic Wand Mini’s next 2 settings get diluted with tighter, buzzier vibrations. The rumbliness is still there, but it’s harder to identify, especially if you’re not applying pressure or straight up straddling the head. (I’m often doing the latter because I usually masturbate at my desk.)

The Mini’s third and final speed ranks somewhere around or above the MWR’s second speed. In raw power, it’s stronger than the PillowTalk Sassy or Satisfyer Yummy Sunshine. The PalmPower Rechargeable is somehow stronger (BMS are true magicians), but it’s much noisier and the head cap is prone to popping loose.

If you’re comparing Magic Wand models because you’re after sheer rumbling power (perhaps for forced orgasm play, or to cope with desensitization), the fullsize Magic Wand Rechargeable has more depth and more muscle by far. Supposedly the corded Plus version is even thumpier, but I resent being tethered to an outlet so I haven’t tried it.

But if strength isn’t your core motivation, the Mini offers versatility the larger Magic Wand models can’t match.

my experiences with the mini

The Mini Magic Wand’s smaller head distributes its vibrations in a narrower range than its larger counterparts. When placed on my clit, the Mini’s vibrations shudder throughout my vulva. But I can’t feel them all the way down in my asshole the way I can with the fullsize Magic Wand Rechargeable.

However, the smaller head allows you to be more targeted, more direct. I can spread my labia and press the Mini firmly against my clit (with the neck flexing enough to accommodate the angle.)

But that limited size serves another purpose: not cockblocking.

While it’s possible to use the fullsize Magic Wand Rechargeable while being fucked, it’s not easy. The MWR blocks like half your vulva in use (depending on anatomy.) The furiously trembling head poses a skidding risk if it slips too low and accidentally bumps your partner/hand/toy. The long, fat handle complicates many partnered sex positions and is difficult to maneuver in the middle of things.

The Mini Magic Wand, on the other hand, can be slid between bodies with relative ease. It hugs the top of my vulva (and/or fits between my labia) without obstructing my vagina. Its slimmer handle is easier to angle out of the way. Surprisingly, the vibrations don’t shake the handle much; I can definitely feel them, but no more than the mid-sized PalmPower.

(That doesn’t make the Mini perfect to pair with penetration. It’s still a straight handle. Wands with angled handles – like the We-Vibe Wand or PalmPower Extreme – are more intuitive for this purpose. They’re also more fat friendly, in my experience. An angled handle curves over my stomach and doesn’t require as much reaching or wrist strain. I wish there were more small and medium sized wands with scooped handles.)

The Mini is better suited to pressing against smaller or partially obstructed parts of someone’s anatomy, like their asshole. If I was using a wand on someone’s penis, I’d probably choose the Mini over the fullsize simply because its sizing would feel more natural to stroke over/along a phallus. (That being said, there’s wands specifically optimized for this purpose.)

Infamously, the Magic Wand Rechargeable has an automatic shutoff feature to avoid overheating. Its ill timing has ruined orgasms for me on several occasions. Since the Mini’s handle warms up while it’s on (even if I’m not holding it), I wasn’t surprised when it automatically died after 20 minutes. You can turn it right back on, though.

final thoughts on the mini magic wand

I’m pretty thrilled a miniature of one of my favorite sex toys exists. Especially one that’s so significantly to me personally. After a decade of jealously ogling the “Hitachi” Magic Wand in feminist art and queer porn, I finally splurged on a Magic Wand Rechargeable in 2017 – and started this blog just weeks later.

The Mini Magic Wand Rechargeable is light and agile (when compared to its predecessors), powerful enough for the average user (but probably not impressive to wand aficionados), and aesthetically iconic. It’s a more accessible introduction to the line, both in price and in approachability.

I keep thinking of it as a fun addition to a hook up bag. It would be a hit at a queer sex party, especially with folks familiar with the Hitachi legacy but too intimidated by its bone-shaking power to use the “real thing.”

That being said, Vibratex is kinda late to the powerful mini/medium-size wand party. I’m bummed that it’s finally here but it’s not as rumbly as its big siblings. Nor is it waterproof, a reasonable expectation of sex toys in 2022.

If you’d like to tuck the Magic Wand Mini Rechargeable between bodies (or into your purse), you can find it on Peepshow Toys for just under $68 with discount code BETTY at checkout.
