Review: Womanizer Liberty Air Clitoral Stimulator

A paper bag spilled out over some grocery store circular pages. There's the pink, empty box for the Womanizer, some lipstick, nail polish, and the Womanizer itself: an avacado-shaped toy with a currently detached cover and an extra nozzle.

The word Womanizer is best left to Britney Spears singles. But when SheVibe offered to send me a Womanizer Liberty for review, I said yes.

Womanizer and Satisfyer (whose name isn’t much better) launched the clitoral air toy craze. (You might have also seen these toys called pressure wave, air pulsation, and clitoral “suction.”)

While Womanizer went luxury (in appearance and in price), Satisfyer went quirky and affordable. I own and love numerous Satisfyer models, but I’m a broke bitch, so the Liberty is my first Womanizer. I’ve always heard than Womanizers provide better, smoother stimulation.

With the Womanizer Starlet and Liberty, Womanizer is finally offering pulsation toys that, while not as cheap as Satisfyer, won’t cost a goddamn kidney. At still double the average Satisfyer price, is the grass that much greener?

what do air pulsation/wave/pressure toys actually do?

The stimulation provided by air pulsation toys is often called “suction,” but it’s more of a pulsating tapping sensation that fully envelopes the clitoris. Depending on your sensitivity, the rhythmic air fluttering can pass as a thumpy sort of suckling. Higher settings make the pulsations faster or stronger (or both), and some models pair these waves with vibration for an added layer of sensation.

It’s difficult to describe pressure waves in a way that doesn’t sound threatening (until I actually tried them, the idea of a “tapping sensation” sounded awful), but oh my fucking god do I love them. When I use the Satisfyer Pro Traveler, I have to hold a pillow over my face to smother my “surely they’re faking it?” level hollering.

The Liberty snugged inside its drawstring storage bag, with its lid off and tucked in beside it.

Admittedly, they’re not for everyone. Some find the sensation too fixated/targeted and intense to enjoy. Some can’t find the right fit among the many nozzle styles and sizes. Some simply don’t like the touchlessness of the sensation. But I’m firmly in the camp of ‘if you’ve got the desire and the means, you should give it a shot’.

But maybe not with the Womanizer Liberty.

womanizer liberty: specs and features

The Womanizer Liberty is a relatively small toy, just four inches long and compact enough to fit in most hands. It’s Womanizer’s answer to the Satisfyer Pro Traveler: a travel-size toy with a magnetic lid for (presumably) stress-free packing. The Liberty is sleek in design and comes in numerous colors including Lilly Allen orange, Red Wine (as mine is), and Powder Blue.

Etched into the smooth plastic is Womanizer’s logo, which is the Walgreens logo but 14% fancier.

Unlike the Satisfyer Pro Traveler, the Womanizer Liberty’s magnetic lid is pretty weak. If the toy were to get stuck between other jostled items in a bag, the lid might pry free. But because the buttons are flat and need to be held down for several seconds to turn the Liberty on, I don’t think it’s at risk of going off in someone’s luggage.

In terms of features, the Womanizer Liberty is rechargeable via USB cord (included), waterproof, and has a modest six intensity settings. It comes with two differently-sized nozzles to strive for a better fit, as well as a wonderfully soft storage bag.

experiencing the Womanizer Liberty

According to my junk, this toy sucks.

And while I would usually say that as a pun because air pulsation toys are often called “suction toys,” in this case I mean the Womanizer Liberty itself is hugely disappointing.

I’ll admit that despite my open dislike of the Womanizer’s name and pricing, I was excited to try the Liberty out. I was hoping for a luxuriously toe-curling experience that would wow me into recommending it as worth saving up for (it’s just under $100 USD) or splurging on for a special occasion. I figured it would be a step up from Satisfyer for lovers of air-based stimulation, earning its price tag through a better, hardier design and more satisfying stimulation.

But the Liberty and my junk don’t get along. It doesn’t get along with my partner’s junk either.

The sensation is shallow and the motor frequently works itself off-rhythm. I actually thought mine might be faulty at first, but several folks I talked to said that Womanizer’s new motors can be “fluttery”/inconsistent. The inconsistency is at its worst on higher levels, and/or when the Liberty is getting close to needing a recharge – in other words, when the motor is working its hardest.

This, paired with how ill-fitting the nozzles are, makes using the Liberty an exercise in patience that never pays off.

sensation inconsistency I: the motor

Starting on the third strength setting, the fluttering of the Womanizer Liberty’s motor becomes… unpredictable. It will randomly (and sometimes rapidly) fluctuate like it’s being strangled and then released, with the pulsation intensity going whisper-weak before becoming abruptly, painfully strong. The fluctuations feel like a more pronounced performance of the underlying choppiness from the motor. This lasts anywhere between two and ten seconds, and can happen several times in five minutes of use.

I honestly can’t say if the Liberty’s motor gets out of sorts because it’s pressed too tight, or it gets angled a certain way, or the wind blows, or it’s because Mercury is in Retrograde – it happens so randomly I can’t keep track. It might be tied to how poorly the nozzles fit my clit… but the fluctuations feel different than the tip losing its vacuum.

sensation inconsistency II: the nozzles

Of the two nozzles sizes provided, neither nozzle fully works for me, nor do they work for my partner, whose vulva and clitoris are shaped differently than mine. (We are both fat, though, which can complicate finding a good fit. These toys aren’t optimized for “buried” clitorises, ie clits surrounded by a prominent mons pubis and thick outer and/or inner labia.) The larger size kinda works, but it’s a struggle to keep it in place.

To enjoy the full sensations provided by air wave toys, the nozzle has to form a comfortable, uninterrupted ‘seal’ around the clitoris. These toys don’t create suction in the traditional sense, but the tip still needs to provide a vacuum space for the pulsations to do their thing. Without a good fit, you might feel nothing (as is my experience with the Satisfyer Pro Penguin 2), or the pulsations might come and go as the ‘seal’ breaks (as is the case with the Womanizer Starlet), or you only get a weak patter from the pulsations.

The Womanizer Liberty’s seal is especially precarious because of the motor’s inconsistency. When the pulsations go wonky, the nozzle loses its vacuum, and the Liberty is more likely to slip out of place. Its cheaper counterpart – the Womanizer Starlet – has a much less pronounced manifestation of this motor issue, but more importantly it doesn’t lose air pressure. I think this is because of the deeper pulsation chamber on the Starlet.

can I get a second opinion?

Being as unimpressed and annoyed as I am, I don’t have much more to say about the Womanizer Liberty. Here’s a sampling of other reviews:

Miss Ruby Reviews said that the Liberty is more “thuddy” or “rumbly” than other Womanizers. On its power: “Pleasure-wise, the Liberty doesn’t fail me. Its touchless orgasms tend to come on QUICKLY, and they don’t leave me over sensitive.”

Super Smash Cache echoed positive sentiments on the Liberty’s power: “It’s an efficient orgasm extractor where I turn the speed until I insta-come. Making it past the fourth setting out of six without feeling too overwhelmed to continue is a challenge.”

“Liberty just wasn’t doing it for me,” Viva La Sexy Blog wrote in their review, “I’ve realized [it’s] that the stimulation is so intense that it becomes overwhelming and I can’t get off.”

Like me, Submissive Feminist struggled with the nozzles, writing, “As a plus-size person, finding the sweet spot with this tiny toy in a way that fully covers the opening is difficult.”

final thoughts on the womanizer liberty

If the rumors are true and Womanizer isn’t putting as much care into their motor construction as in models past, that’s a shame. I’ve read dozens of reviews of their older products; at some point, they were clearly worth the hype if not the pricetag. I was excited for more affordable offerings.

I’m still excited, honestly. There’s a new air pulsation toy out every other month it seems. Womanizer has released and discontinued so many models that it’s impossible to keep up, and Satisfyer has more variants than a Marvel comic. Perhaps recent Womanizers were missteps and the next generation will come with cheaper, quality toys.

In the meantime, I’ll be in my bunk with the Satisfyer Pro Traveler, which sucks in the good way for less than half the price.
