Review: Lovehoney x Romp Switch Clitoral Suction Stimulator

Lovehoney rescued the Romp Switch!

I bought a Romp Switch Clitoral Suction Stimulator for Christmas in 2021. Not long after, it started disappearing from digital shelves. I was sad to see it go! Despite being less than $40 USD, it’s a high quality sex toy. It’s perfect for beginners and folks on a budget.

Turns out the Romp Switch just has a new home – and a new coloration.

romp switch design and features

The Romp Switch uses air pulsation instead of vibration to stimulate you. Once the smooth silicone nozzle encircles the clitoris or nipple (or is pressed against the frenulum), the motor creates an undulating flutter of air. This can feel like suction (hence sometimes being called clitoral suction vibrators) but to me it feels like rapid tapping.

If you’re looking for actual suction, you might want to try a pussy pump instead. Those create a suction seal and pull when you pump, which is in some ways more intense than air pulsation. If you’re looking for a steady pull without much fuss, nipple suckers are an upstairs option.

Most modern sex toys are rechargeable, but the Romp Switch uses 2 AAA batteries. I’m usually pretty comfortable generalizing battery-powered toys as weak, but the Romp Switch beats those allegations. Its motor isn’t as strong as my Satisfyer Pro 2, but the Switch has a cheaper price tag – and its robust speeds are plenty strong enough for me!

The now-scarce original Romp Switch is orange. Lovehoney’s exclusive version is a pastel lavender. They’re otherwise identical, with a rigid plastic body and smooth silicone nozzle and buttons. The nozzle can be removed for easier cleaning.

You have 2 buttons to control the Romp Switch’s 6 speeds: increase and decrease. It’s rare for a toy under $50 to bother with multiple buttons. I sometimes get overeager and speed up before my body’s actually ready, so I’m grateful I can just click the down button instead of having to click through all 6 speeds to get back.

Need to change the batteries? There’s a seam that runs around the toy’s plastic shell, with a tiny divot at the tip (the narrower end.) Use your fingernails to pry it open, then carefully pull the entire back panel off. This can be tricky to do and has stumped both casual consumers and pro reviewers alike! There’s actually a divot at the bottom end of the toy; use at least two nails – one in the divot and one in the seam on the side – for easier removal. If your fingernails aren’t long/strong enough, I’ve been able to jimmy it open with a pen tip.

If that sounds too tedious, the Romp Shine is the rechargeable (and pricier) version of Switch.

The Romp Switch is waterproof, with marketing mentioning using it in the shower and bath. I’m not a bathtub masturbator, but I appreciate not having to worry about the internal components when I’m washing the toy in the sink.

my experience with the romp switch

There’s a downside to air pulsation toys (also called clitoral suction vibrators, pulsation wave stimulators, and various amalgamations) compared to traditional clit vibrators. In order to work, the air pulsation toy’s nozzle needs to fit around your clitoris and maintain a seal the air can flutter in. That means the mouth has to be flat (or mostly flat) against the surrounding skin.

The Womanizer Liberty didn’t work well for me because the nozzle didn’t sit flat. I was worried about the Romp Switch because Romp is a Womanizer brand, but I was willing to gamble because (unlike the luxury-priced Womanizer) the Switch is so budget friendly. I got Blackjack, because the Romp Switch fits just fine!

The Romp Switch Clitoral Stimulator has a decent range of intensities. Its first speed is a pleasant puttering that already feels like it’s pulsing deeper than skin. The steady thrumming of it travels like rumbling vibrations to stimulate the internal parts of the clit. Which is wild, because this is just air. It’s not touching or shaking anything.

Each subsequent setting ramps this up further (with pretty consistent jumps in power between speeds) until you reach the sixth speed: frantic fluttering. The pulsing is tighter so the sensation feels less like lapping waves and more like rapid, deliberate rippling. It almost feels like when you put a showerhead on your clit.

The Romp Switch’s sixth/highest speed is not as intense as my Satisfyer’s sixth speed (of 10, I believe.) A lot of people never venture past the middling speeds on their Satisfyer or Womanizer due to the pinpoint intensity anyway. (I do, but I also love the Zumio.) If you’re new to these kinds of toys (and you don’t crave pelvic shuddering intensity), the Romp Switch has plenty to offer.

My only complaint (besides how tricky it is to change the batteries) is the stylish design of the buttons. I feel out the plus and minus symbols to know where to press without having to look. But on the Romp Switch, these symbols are partially etched onto the toy’s hard shell. I have to move my fingertip around to find the stiff but pressable part of the button. It’s a small but persistently annoying quirk.

The Romp Switch makes more noise when it’s not against skin, but even in use it’s definitely audible. It makes a kinda fluttery droning that’s close enough to vibration that it’s not gonna pass as a car driving by to an eavesdropping roommate. But a closed door and comforter should provide plenty of buffer, because the Switch isn’t loud. Think “broken laptop fan.”

final thoughts on the switch

I’m so happy the Romp Switch found a new home at Lovehoney. (Lovehoney also rescued the reviewer-beloved Womanizer Pro 40 – maybe I’ll get my paws on it one day?) This budget-friendly, beginner-friendly alternative to the pricier Womanizer line is a great first time air pulsation purchase.

There are a few folks I’d specifically caution about purchasing the Romp Switch. First, people with limited hand/finger mobility. The toy’s slick shell is difficult to grasp, the battery panel is incredibly tricky to open, and the buttons are stiff and can be hard to navigate. Second, folks who already have a cache of air pulsation toys. The Switch’s limited range might bore you – unless you always stick to low/middling speeds anyway and you’re after a battery-powered pulsation toy for discretion or travel.

For everyone else: find the Romp Switch Clitoral Stimulator in lavender at Lovehoney.

This hybrid pump/vibe is… unique. The Pipedream Roto Suck-Her is a vibrating, vulva-shaped pussy pump. But not really? Because of its shallow cup, it doesn’t have the room to function like a traditional pump. It’s more like a lightly vibratey, lightly sucky… thingy. Like others […]
