I’ve wanted a DragonTailz Blue Devil Leather Flogger for years. Last year I finally bought it.

For some kinksters, sex and BDSM are separate activities (especially for folks who don’t desire the former.) For me, the two have always been intermingled – I don’t enjoy one without the other. That’s lead to some literal sticky situations over the years. Like picking up an impact toy with a leather-wrapped handle… when I have lube (or some other sex gunk) on my fingers.

The Blue Devil Leather Flogger by DragonTailz has leather falls, but its handle is made of hard plastic. That makes it sticky-finger safe!

DragonTailz is a leather gear maker based out of North Carolina. They’ve been in business for over 20 years and are stocked in dozens of shops across the US. The BDSM retailer I bought my flogger from, Stockroom, also carries their 4ft Dragon Tail Whip.

The Devil Leather Flogger is about 25 inches long, which most makers label “mid size.” That’s about the same length as my arm (hand included.) It’s small enough to wield in an apartment bedroom, but big enough that it doesn’t feel like a novelty toy.

The 24 falls (sometimes called tails, tresses, or flogs) are made from one piece of leather, so the individual strips are all attached at the bottom. That means it’s basically impossible for a fall to fall out. (Say that five times fast!) The leather is soft. The top of every tail is slickly textured and black, and the underside is suede-y and blue.

To be honest, it’s not as blue as I was hoping. The listing warns that – as with all hand-crafted goods – colors can vary. But rather than being “a stylishly understated splash of color,” my Devil Leather Flogger’s “blue” is a muted, muddy grayscale. If you’re looking for bolder hues, there’s full-color Red Devil, Pink Devil, and Purple Devil variations.

I love gliding the Dragontailz Flogger’s supple falls over skin. The soft, luxurious leather is just heavy enough to provide a sensual stroke rather than a tickle (depending on your sensitivity.) Petting my inner thighs is a toe-curling experience.

The Devil Leather Flogger’s handle is made of polypropylene, a durable but lightweight plastic with a slippery surface. If you have a plastic cup or plate that’s labeled microwave and dishwasher safe, it’s probably made with polypropylene! The handle has a vaguely rubbery finish. There’s a decorative, antique-y looking cap on the base to save the Devil Leather Flogger from being plain jane. (Mine is admittedly a little off-center.)

It’s not just the handle that’s lightweight. The Devil Leather Flogger in its entirety is startlingly light. If your fingers or wrist struggle bearing weight (as mine sometimes do), that’s great news. If you want some heft to your impact toys, well…

my experience with devil leather

The Devil Leather Flogger is not my only budget range flogger. Lovehoney’s Fifty Shades flogger and the Nubuck Leather flogger by Bound have been hanging on my gear rack for years.

The Fifty Shades flogger’s PU falls feel like a step up from shredded paper. They’re feather light and produce a whispery sting (but only if you focus your force at the tips.) I only use the Fifty Shades flogger for what I call “bitchy” impact play: terrorizing a recipient’s nipples, hands, and genitals. It’s too gentle for much else.

If the Fifty Shades flogger is paper, the Bound Nubuck Leather Flogger is dense spaghetti suede. It has 36 long, thin, heavy falls that tangle when not properly managed and deliver a sharp, startlingly strong clap. It’s the hardest hitter of my budget floggers, so I use it for heavier play.

In terms of potential pain, the Devil Leather Flogger sits in the middle of the huge gulf between the Fifty Shades flogger and the Bound Nubuck Leather. A heavy, intentional swing gives your bottom a thump – but it’s only as painful as a medium effort hand smack. This flogger is a light hitter.

The Blue Devil Leather Flogger’s falls are too light to provide the thuddiness you might expect from pricier floggers. But their width and quality saves them from the ‘bitey bits of paper’ effect of cheapier fare. The tips provide a flash of sting as they splash (or if you flick the flogger for a tips-focused blow), but overall the Devil Leather Flogger sits on the clappy thump part of the impact sensation spectrum.

That being said, this flogger sounds like a much heavier toy. Even lighter claps create a distinctly visceral slap-crack of sound. Great bark, mild bite – ideal for scenes where you want the illusion of heavy impact without having to actually suffer for it.

Because the Dragontailz Flogger is so light weight, it can be weird to handle. The falls flutter more than heavier peers’ when flung and sometimes splash back when they strike skin. But unlike my Bound flogger they don’t get tangled up with each other. The handle is balanced (its weight is equal to the falls, providing a good equilibrium for swinging) and feels good in my hand. Still, swinging took practice while I came to terms with having less pull/feedback than heftier floggers (because you’re throwing less weight.)

The handle has no texture. That makes it easier to wipe down if you play with sticky fingers, but it also makes it more slippery. Especially with sticky fingers! If you’re not mindful, the handle can skid in your grip when you throw. (I may or may not have, on occasion, fumbled my flogger like a fuckin’ Wiimote. Don’t judge me.) If the Devil Leather Flogger was a heavier hitter, I might be nervous about the lack of grippable grooves in the handle. But this is a gentle smacker!

After sitting on my Stockroom wishlist for years, I’m glad the Blue Devil Leather Flogger by DragonTailz is finally mine.

On the maker’s website, the Blue Devil Leather Flogger is called an Intro Flogger, and I think that’s a good call. It’s a great beginner’s flogger: medium-sized (thus pretty easy and intuitive to handle), incredibly sturdy, and comparatively mild even with heavier swings. It’s light in weight, but quality in construction. I have no doubt it’ll survive on my gear rack (albeit with a loop handle of my own making since the tiny elastic it comes with is too restrictive) for a decade past all the plasticy pleather duds I’ve collected over the years.

I just wish it was actually blue!!
